The title page of a book is the authority for cataloging bibliographic records. As one fills our the New Materials form, look for the following data:
The verso (i.e. the reverse side/back) o f the title page should then be searched for the copyright date and the ISBN. One may also have to search for the publisher here. Select the ISBN that matches the format of the item in hand.
One should not use the ISBN on the back of the book to fill out the New Materials form. Most publishers and book jobbers use that ISBN as an inventory record for their stock. However, as with any rule there are exceptions. The publisher Usborne/EDC almost always only places a book's ISBN on the back. Here is an example:
